Funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the East-West Center hosts the Institutes for Natural Resource Managers under the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) and Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI). Starting in 2018, the Institutes are in partnership with the University of Montana Mansfield Center. The vision of the Institutes is to develop a vibrant network of young leaders connected to the U.S. who are equipped to create innovative solutions to 21st century environmental challenges. Participants are competitively selected from U.S. Embassies in Southeast Asian countries for the 5-week institutes. Past participants came from Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, and Singapore (YSEALI) and, Brazil, China, Japan, Jordan, Palestinian Territories, Russia and Turkey (SUSI Global). The first three weeks take place in Hawai‘i, followed by a week in the San Francisco Bay Area and Yosemite National Park, and final week in Washington DC. Past institutes have included field studies in Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii, the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, and Monterey Bay Area of California.
Participants learn about the environment through experiential methods and build leadership skills through active learning. They work in teams with U.S. businesses, NGOs, and government agencies to design innovation labs, crowdfunding campaigns, challenge prizes, accelerators, and leadership retreats that can then be delivered with community partners in their home communities. A key outcome of the institute is to implement home country initiatives. An EWC Impact Incubator supports alumni teams pilot small initiatives that can lead to larger proposals for the U.S. State Department Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund grants ($25,000) and YSEALI Seeds for the Future grants ($20,000).
