Pre-Arrival Assignment

Leadership Action Plan (LAP) Project Assignment

During the Global Environmental Issues (GEI) Institute, you will develop a Leadership Action Plan (LAP) project. While in Hawaii, you will present this LAP to a large, international audience at the East-West Center. At the end of the program in Washington DC, you will present your LAP to United States Department of State representatives. In the past, this challenging but rewarding assignment has been a highlight of the GEI Program for many participants.

As an international participant in a US State Department International Exchange Program, you will be eligible for the Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF). LAP project proposals should be aligned with the requirements of this fund. If aligned then submitted, LAP projects can be eligible for up to $25,000USD. Each year a participant from the EWC GEI Institute has won this award. During the program, we will share more about these winning projects.

Will your LAP be the next AEIF winner? Here is how to get started. Before departing for the United States, follow these steps:

1) Register immediately as a US State Department International Exchange Alumni (current participants also accepted): https://alumni.state.gov/about-international-exchange-alumni/registration-instructions This should be done immediately since this process can take several weeks.

2) Watch the videos and read the phases, project categories, and commonly asked questions of the Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund  https://alumni.state.gov/aeif . Read an example of an EWC GEI alumni’s 2012 winning project http://www.interntolearn.org/

3) While waiting for registration confirmation from the US State Department, develop a LAP and create a website to host your LAP. We recommend using the free website hosting service wix.com. Use the guidelines on the AEIF website and follow the same format of the other AEIF projects of EWC GEI alumni:

http://aseanecodebates.weebly.com/(2013 AEIF applicant)

http://mangroveconservation.wix.com/susicambodia (2013 AEIF applicant)

http://yepcamp.weebly.com/index.html (2013 AEIF applicant)

4) After receiving registration confirmation, post your LAP project proposal on the AEIF site https://alumni.state.gov/aeif  This must be done before the deadline: May 12. For Phase 1, you are only required to submit a project proposal. However, you must meet this deadline to proceed to Phase 2: Finalists Project Competition and Voting.
