Environmental Science, Ateneo de Davao University, Philippines
Home Community Project: ECOPPORTUNITIES

Ms. Fiona Samantha M. Ajoc majored in Environment Science and completed her first year at Ateneo de Davao University. She is also a Registered Nurse. Working as a school nurse in 2010, she took her students to climb mountains and visit local rivers for cleaning up and tree planting. She also conducted school heath awareness seminars outside, within nature, rather than in the walls of the school clinic. Becoming an environmentalist or having a green-collar job has always been her dream.

Home Community Project: BALILI RIVER ENGINEERED REHABILITATION CONTEST

Mr. Francis Paul A. Bayan is studying Chemical Engineering and completed his third year at Saint Louis University. Mr. Bayan volunteers for the annual inspection of dumpsites in his region. He has generated programs for Earth Hour and organized campaigns against the cutting of 180 trees to make an urban mall in Baguio City. He has particular interest in projects related to Environmental Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, and Advanced Waste Treatment.

Sociology and Anthropology, University Brunei Darussalam, Brunei
Home Community Project: GIVING EMPOWERMENT THROUGH AGRICULTURE

Mr. Muhammad Hazimi bin Haji Jaidi is studying Sociology and Anthropology and completed his third year of study at the University Brunei Darussalam. He is acting president of the Society for Community Outreach and Training (SCOT) and has been active in leading student organizations on a number of sustainable community projects. Mr. Jaidi has volunteered not only in Brunei, but also in Cambodia in 2013 for the SCOT Education Project on teaching English in developing communities within ASEAN.

Home Community Project: STUDENT-LEADER COLLABORATION IN THE SOUTHEAST ASIAN REGION

Ms. Alecxa Denise L. Callao completed her first year at Ateneo de Davao University with a major in Environmental Science. She is interested in both traditional and progressive ways of environmental protection and preservation. As a writer and thorough researcher, she used her skills to successfully defend urban poor communities whose houses were due for demolition in Davao City. She believes people have the right to know the advantages and disadvantages in the process of development and that it is important to provide education to the communities that will be affected.

Home Community Project: SINGAPORE YOUTH ENERGY LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Mr. Zhiwei Cheng is studying Materials Science, Engineering, and Economics and completed his third year at the National University of Singapore. Learning in different fields gives him complementary perspectives to look at the intertwined issues of the environment and energy. He worked as an intern at the Economist Service, Ministry of Trade and Industry. He was also a project assistant at Golden Concord Energy Investment and a volunteer at Ayer Rajah-West Coast Community Centre.

Home Community Project: ACEH DOCUMENTARY FILM

Ms. Diana completed her second year study at Ar-Raniry State Islamic University with a major in Civil Islamic Law. She is also studying at the English Department of Syiah Kuala University. She joined Friend of Walhi (Sahabat Walhi) to pursue her interest in learning about environmental issues and was selected as the coordinator of the Indonesian Environmental Forum in Aceh. She is working to build quality human resources in the future to deal with environmental issues by organizing activities such as the Focus Group Discussion about Environmental Issues.

Home Community Project: BRUNEI GREEN AMAZING RACE EXPEDITION

Ms. Noorussaadah Hassem completed her second year at the University Brunei Darussalam with a major in Applied Physics. She has a strong interest in advanced technologies especially green or smart technologies. She would like to inspire and create innovative technologies and ideas to tackle global environmental issues. She has volunteered at the Public Works Department, Ministry of Development Oil and Gas Discovery Centre, and Brunei Shell Petroleum Institute Teknologi Brunei.

Home Community Project: THE BICYCLE PROJECT

Ms. Jasmin Irisha Jim Ihham finished her first year of study at University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus studying Environmental Science. She has been involved in many programs such as the Youth Awareness on Climate Change conducted by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Malaysia Student Leaders Summit organized by the United Kingdom and Eire Council of Malaysia Students (UKEC). Following her graduation, Ms. Jim Ilham would like to pursue a graduate degree oversees in the field of Sustainable Development. She then hopes to have a career in an environmental consultancy firm or perhaps set up her own company.

Home Community Project: BRING YOUR OWN CONTAINERS

Mr. Wei Meng William Kwan completed his third year at National University of Singapore with the major in Philosophy. He is the current President of NUS Students Against Violation of the Earth (SAVE) and has been involved in initiating the plastic bag tax at NUS to encourage waste minimization. His ambition is to become a diplomat involved in climate change negotiations. He was the stage manager of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) Chinese Society’s Drama Production.

Home Community Project: RAINWATER HARVESTING FOR COMMUNITY GARDENS USE

Mr. Mun Hoong Lum completed his second year of study at University Putra Malaysia (UPM) with a major in Environmental Management. He participated in the MIRACLE Youth Conference AIESEC 2013 Promoting Sustainability of the Environment to High School Students and delivered a speech on the “Impact of Green Technology on Environmental Sustainability”. He believes that the environmental can only be sustained through environmentally sensitive and responsible management.

Animan Nutrition and Food Science, Hasanuddin University, Indonesia
Home Community Project: MORINGA BISCUITS

Mr. Musawwir Muhtar is currently a fourth year student with a major in Animal Nutrition and Feed Science in Hasanuddin University. His research is aimed at the creation of animal feed that reduces methane gas production emitted from stock animals in order to mitigate the climate and environmental damage caused by animal methane. For this project he was awarded as the Altech Young Scientist in 2013. Mr. Muhtar has also been involved in food security projects. Besides, he is very active on his campus within the scientific community and is committed to the promotion of sustainable agriculture and other environmental protections.

Ms. Srie Mulyati completed her third year at Indonesia University of Education with a major in Chemistry Education. She has sustained a high level of academic achievement and demonstrates great commitment to her community. She is also very active in extracurricular university activities. Ms. Mulyati is the project leader for Eco Campus Campaign Indonesia University of Education and Chairman of Lingkung Seni Sunda (LIESE) Art Club. She was awarded as the best student in her university in 2012.

Home Community Project: PH YOUTH BAYANIHAN HUB FOR HEALTH IN DISASTERS

Mr. Christian James A. Nazareth is a third-year student in the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. Studying at the College of Medicine created an avenue for him to realize the relationship between the environment and human health. He is focusing on marine conservation, climate change and its effects on Philippine communities, and the intersection of environment and human health. He was the president of the University of the Philippines Marine Biological Society.

Home Community Project: REUSABLE BAG CAMPAIGN

Ms. Ranitya Nurlita completed her third year at Bogor Agricultural University with a major in Aquatic Resources Management. She has been actively involved in a variety of extracurricular activities including activities related to environmental issues. She created the comic book Fisheries & Aquatic Environment Comic. The book is to educate young child about pollution, fisheries, agriculture, environment, and climate change. Ms. Nurlita was selected as the 2013 Grand Finalist of Hilo Green Ambassador representing the province of Jakarta and represented Indonesia at the International Youth Environment Meeting in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She dreams of becoming an environmentalist.

Home Community Project: PROJECT SECOND LIFE

Mr. Sim How Sian is studying English Language Teaching at Southern University College. He was the vice-president of External Affairs of the Student Union. In 2012, Mr. Sim along with thee other committee members from Si-Yuan Society set up Malaysia’s first Honesty Shop, in Southern University College. The shop serves the educational purposes of being honest and upholds the values of the 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). Mr. Sim would like to be a TV or radio broadcaster, translator, writer and emcee for various events after his graduation.

Home Community Project: PLANT MY TREE

Mr. Alphaeus Win Syuen Tan finished his first year study at Monash University with a major in Business and Commerce. He was crowned the first Malaysian ASEAN champion in the P&G ASEAN Business Challenge held in Singapore. He was among 500 applicants selected from over 105 countries for participation in the Global Startup Youth program that was organized by the Ministry of Finance Malaysia and Startup Malaysia in partnership with the U.S. State Department, a follow-up victory after becoming the national champion of Malaysia in the business challenge. Mr. Tan is working on his #CleanMYCity Campaign, with Instagram as the main platform, in order to bring awareness to waste management in Malaysia as well as the rest of the globe.

Home Community Project: ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Ms. Shin Huoy Terh completed her first year of study at the National University of Singapore with a major in Environmental Studies. She has been actively involved in environmental related issues as a member of SAVE, Students Against the Violation of Earth. She is also involved in media production for different audiences as a form of educational outreach about the environment. Environmental policy-making is at the top of her future careers list.

Home Community Project: SKIMMER

Mr. Wei Kuang Wong completed his third year study at the University Brunei Darussalam with a major in Environment and Life Science. He is an environmental enthusiast and was selected as a UN Environment Program Youth Ambassador for the meeting in Bali in 2013. He believes in eco-tourism as a sustainable avenue for Brunei and would like to pursue a career in Environmental Consultancy. Mr. Wong has been involved in a number of local environmental clubs and was the President of the Wildlife Club in Brunei.

Home Community Project: BANDUNG YOUTH HERO ON DISASTER

Mr. Mohammad Yusuf completed his study at Padjadjaran University with a major in Geological Engineering. He has been actively involved in activities concerning environmental issues since high school. In November 2013, he founded Gesture (Geological Observation & Disaster-Environmental Education), which is a social project to inspire green living on campus. He was selected as one of the delegates representing his university at the Asian University Student Environmental Forum in Tokyo in 2012. Mr. Yusuf would like to become a geothermal expert with a vision to produce environmental-friendly geothermal energy. He also has great enthusiasm for writing, blogging and journalism.
